There is also a swimming assessment in a 25 metre pool where candidates are required to complete a 400m swim in under 8 minutes. All candidates on the course will be assessed on the final day by an RLSS assessor, who will be looking for good knowledge and understanding in the following areas: You will be required to pass all modules to gain your qualification. The course cost includes the comprehensive RLSS Beach Lifeguard Qualification manual providing an essential resource for all lifeguards. You will spend time in the sea as well as completing classroom based theory sessions. The training on the course requires you to complete both practical and theory modules. The course is run by a team of experienced watermen and qualified RLSS trainers, all of who are qualified lifeguards and surf instructors working on the beach and in the sea every day. Our training centre is based at Croyde beach in North Devon and with two other beaches nearby, it is the perfect location to offer a range of surf conditions to train in. The full course is suitable for those new to lifeguarding and is run over 5 days including a final assessment. There is also the option of a shorter course for existing beach lifeguards looking to requalify. This is an essential requirement for anyone looking to work as a surf instructor or work as a beach lifeguard. This course is open to anyone looking to gain an internationally recognised beach lifeguard qualification in the UK. Indeed skills such as first aid, leadership and incident management are highly sought after by employers.Royal Life Saving Society National Vocational Beach Lifeguard Qualification Many of the qualifications available to lifeguards are now consistent with the NZ qualifications framework, meaning they are nationally recognised and transferable into many employment situations. There are however, several opportunities to continue improving and broadening your skill base in several different directions. Some lifeguards are content to achieve their Surf Lifeguard Award, and provided they are ‘refreshed’ each season, continue to patrol the beach for many years. Here at Piha SLSC we are focused on a proactive approach preferring to carry out preventative actions (dealing with problems before they arise) rather than rescues. Patrol members will rotate between responsibilities, keeping themselves active. Once this is done the P.C will direct beach patrols (patrolling the flags) and roaming patrols using the quad bikes or 4WD vehicle. The first thing a patrol will do is set up the flagged area. Each patrol will consist of a mixture of experienced and new members with a wide range of skills. Every patrol has a Patrol Captain (P.C.), who is responsible for the smooth running of the patrol, setting up of the flagged area and general patrol operations. On a normal weekend, patrols run from 10am – 5pm Saturday and Sunday. The target audience for this programme is 13 year old junior surf members wishing to become a Surf Lifeguard next season. The Rookie Lifeguard Programme aims to promote “practical lifeguarding” to the younger members and develop strong ties between senior and junior members as a result of involvement. The Rookie Lifeguard Programme has been designed to help junior surf members prepare to be a Surf Lifeguard.
